Contax 500mm 8.0 Lens Specifications Page*

This Mirotar is less than five inches long and three and one half inches in diameter. It is composed of six elements in four groups, two are extremely high quality mirrors. The system used in Carl Zeiss Mirotar lenses to reduce the size is called folded optics. It consists of the primary mirror re-directing light forward to the inside of the center spot at the front of the lens. This light is then re-directed by a smaller mirror back to the rear of the lens where it passes though a hole in the center of the primary mirror. The light is then further corrected by achromatized refractive lens elements before exiting the lens and passing to the film. The Mirotar 8/500 lens is designed for the Contax SLR-system and consists of three components: the main Margin mirror, the front group with a catchment mirror and the correction system. Due to the initial aperture of 1:8 and a new construction, size and weight are relatively low. The lens has a rotating tripod mount. This lens ideal for telephotography. It also handles close-ups from a distance of 3.5 meters.
This lens is similar in design to a reflective telescope. Complemented by two chromatically corrected lenses both in front and behind the mirrors, chromatic aberrations are reduced to a minimum.

*Please note that Contax is Kaput! Kyrocera pulled the plug on the Contax camera system in 2005. So buyer beware. You'll only have used parts to service the camera with, and good luck finding a certified Contax camera technician
